Understanding oxidative stress

Oxygen is essential for life but it can also be inherently dangerous. When we breathe in air, our lungs take in oxygen which passes through the thin walls of the alveoli in the lungs to the blood and attaches itself to the haemoglobin in the blood. Then the heart pumps this oxygen via blood which is translocated to all parts of the body where the haemoglobin releases the oxygen so it can enter the cells. Within every cell is a furnace called MITOCHONDREA, it burns safely and produces energy required by the cells of the body to function.

The MITOCHONDREA reduces oxygen by transfer of electrons to produce energy in the form of ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE (ATP) and water as a by product. This process goes on smoothly most of the time but the full compliment of four electrons needed to reduce oxygen to water are not always present as planned leading to the production of FREE RADICALS. Whichever part of the body receives the most free radical damage is the first to wear out and develop degenerative diseases as a result of this OXIDATIVE STRESS. This happens when the body’s anti-oxidants are over powered by the excess free radicals which are not neutralized which sets off a chain reaction causing OXIDATIVE STRESS. The free radical damages the cell membranes, vessel walls, proteins, fats and the DNA nucleus causing degenerative diseases like coronary artery disease, cancer, strokes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s dementia , macular degeneration , Parkinson’s disease, lupus, diabetes, crohn’s disease, ageing, etc.

The need for nutritional supplementation

he tremendous damage that oxidative stress inflicts during a normal routine on the human body highlights the need to optimize our own natural defense mechanism (IMMUNE SYSTEM). These are far superior to any drugs that doctors may prescribe and represent the finest in main stream preventive medicine.

Antioxidants need the availability of other nutrients in adequate amounts to complete their job of neutralizing free radicals. They need sufficient minerals like copper, zinc, magnesium, selenium, which aid in the chemical reaction of the antioxidants without which they remain ineffective. Also essential are certain cofactors for enzymatic reactions like vitamin B cofactors, folic acid, and vitamins B1/B2/B6/B12 for antioxidants efficacy. The above in addition to the consumption of junk food results in more nutrient starvation, THE MORE ONE EATS.

The old concept of RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances) is outdated and not in keeping with the modern day pollution, stress, etc. Much higher dosages are required to prevent onset, stabilize or reverse chronic degenerative diseases. The amount of intake of raw fruits and vegetables required to ensure enough nutrient availability for the body’s IMMUNE SYSTEM are not practically possible and hence the need for nutritional supplementation.
